2007 - Both Boston’s Manny Fernandez (26 saves) and New York’s Henrik Lundqvist (19 saves) earn shutouts in a 1-0 Boston shootout win over NY Rangers 1947 - A 3-1 Boston win over the New York Rangers is repeatedly delayed due to fog and soft ice conditions caused by 80-degree temperatures inside Boston Garden. There is a 40-minute delay after the second period so players from both teams could get their skates resharpened.
1966- Bobby Orr makes his debut in a Boston uniform and Harry Sinden is behind the bench for his first game as Boston coach as the Bruins defeat the Detroit Red Wings, 6-2. It is their first opening night victory since 1962 Ross Brooks was born 77 years ago in Toronto, Ontario.
At the age of 34, Ross Brooks was signed as a free agent by the Boston Bruins on October 2, 1971. He played with the club's AHL affiliate, the Boston Braves, before being called up to the Bruins where he played in 16 games during the 1972-73 season, going 11-1-3 with three shutouts and a 2.64 gaa. The following year he was every bit as good, compiling a 16-3-0 record while posting a 2.36 gaa in a backup role to starter Gilles Gilbert. Brooks was back in Boston in 1974-75, starting 17 games for the Bruins as a 37-year-old backup. Once again, he posted an excellent record, going 10-3-3. 1949 - In pre-game ceremonies of a 2-2 tie with the New York Rangers, NHL President Clarence Campbell presents the Lady Byng Trophy to Boston’s Bill Quackenbush. He becomes the first defenseman to win the award. For the first time in Boston Garden, the ice is painted white to make following the puck easier.

Happy Birthday to Bruins legend Willie O'Ree -- hockey's Jackie Robinson The hockey world changed forever on January 18th, 1958. That was the day Boston Bruin winger Willie O'Ree made his NHL debut. And almost no one reported it. Willie Eldon O'Ree was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada on October 15, 1935. At the time of his birth there was only one other black family living in Fredericton. That's right. What makes O'Ree so unique is he was the first African- Canadian/American to play in the NHL. It is a milestone that is still not widely recognized. There are many hockey fans today who have never heard of Willie. But he encountered the same type of racism that Jackie Robinson did more than a decade earlier. In fact O'Ree was still dealing with racist hate letters 50 years after his first NHL game.
