Daniel E. "Dan" Canney, Boston Bruins Head Trainer from 1962 to 1985. A lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life suddenly on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 84 years old.
Dan was born in Boston on May 26, 1932, a son of the late Daniel Canney and Mary (Walsh) Canney. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1940 where he was a goal tender for the varsity hockey team. Dan worked for several semi professional hockey teams as a Athletic Trainer and in 1962 he was hired by the Boston Bruins to become their Head Athletic Trainer which he held until 1985. Dan also worked at Rockingham Race Track in Salem, New Hampshire in their Mutual Department and Suffolk Sterling Race Track in East Boston where he was responsible for supervising the silk colors for the jockeys racing. Dan was a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and is a member of The National Hockey League Hall Of Fame. Dan is the beloved husband of 60 years to Margaret T. "Peg" (Meehan) Canney. He is the devoted father of Michael G. Canney of Charlestown, Catherine T. Donahue and her husband Dana of Ohio, Mary Beth Hetherton of Winthrop and the late Daniel E. Canney III. He is the loving Grandpa to John Donahue, Kimberly Donahue, Nicole Donahue, Jaclyn Hetherton, William Hetherton and Carolyn Hetherton. He is the beloved brother of Mary Canney of Medford and the late Ellen Canney. He is also lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews. |
