Happy 73rd Birthday Phil Esposito
Phil knew how to celebrate his birthday ...

On This Day in 1971: Espo scored his 50th goal of the season (on his 29th birthday), in a 5-4 Bruins' loss in Los Angeles. He became just the fourth player in NHL history (and the first Boston Bruin) to get 50 goals in a season.

On This Day in 1972: He scored two goals, including his 50th goal of the season (on his 30th birthday) and added an assist as the Bruins won 3-1, at Chicago. It was Esposito's second straight 50-goal season.

MARLBOROUGH — On March 22, the Boston Bruins Alumni and West Point Hockey Alumni teams will partner with the Fisher House Boston for a charity hockey game at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough.

All proceeds will benefit the Fisher House Boston, a foundation which provides housing for military families while loved ones are being treated. This is the third year the Bruins Alumi team will support the non-profit through a hockey game.

Michelle Keating, president of Fisher House Boston, says that the event raised $20,000 in 2013, and $30,000 last year. This year, the goal is at least $50,000.

The goal “is to raise money for the military families to stay at the Fisher House or that need support, whether it’s transportation, food, hotel housing,” said Keating at a briefing at the rink
Thursday morning.

“But the bigger piece is the community being aware of how important it is to support our veterans when they come home.”

According to Fisher House Boston executive director Jennifer DeLuca, the foundation is the highest-rated military charity in the country, with 97 percent of all of the money raised going straight back to the cause.

Dale Kurtz, the president of the West Point Alumni Association for New England, is ecstatic to “support such a great organization. There’s a lot of hype about us being able to play against the Bruins, but our goal is to raise money to support the Fisher House and the great work that they do.”

One of those former Bruins, Rick Middleton, is no stranger to aiding causes. One of the captains of the Bruins Alumni team, ‘Nifty’ said the squad participates in more than 30 charity hockey games per year.
