RIP Bobby Schmautz

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Bobby Schmautz “Schmautzie” has passed away peacefully at his home in Peoria, Arizona on his birthday March 28th with his wonderful partner Tess his daughters Cindi and Dena and Gerry and Margie Sillers at his side. 

Bobby had a strong personality, both on and off the ice, and battled hard right up until the end.  He was 76 years old

"Schmautzie" will be very much missed, but never forgotten.

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Schmautz started his National Hockey League (NHL) career with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1968. Schmautz played the majority of his NHL career with the Boston Bruins, and also played for the Vancouver Canucks, Colorado Rockies, and Edmonton Oilers.

Schmautz scored the overtime goal for Boston in Game Four of the 1978 Stanley Cup final versus Montreal to level the series at two games apiece. A photograph of Schmautz celebrating his goal was used as the cover photo for the Bruins' 1978–1979 media guide.

Overall, Schmautz scored 26 playoff goals for Boston.

Playing under Bruin coach Don Cherry, Schmautz developed late in his career into an accomplished forechecker and backchecker. For the Bruins he usually played right wing on a line with hall-of-famer Johnny Bucyk and versatile center Gregg Sheppard.
